What do you do for a living? I am a licensed chemical dependency counselor and professional counselor and the founder of Whole Again Counseling + Wellness. Whole Again is a whole-person wellness center that brings wellness practitioners together under one roof.
How did you first connect with Herren Project?
I had been showing my counseling groups the Chris Herren documentary “Unguarded” and looked up more information about Chris and his recovery. I had heard from a friend that he was advocating for people in recovery. I found the Herren Project website and learned about Team Herren Project. I sent a message to Pam to find out how I could get involved. Signed up for a race as soon as I could!
What is your interest in/connection to recovery?
I am in recovery. In 2011, my life was falling apart. Gratefully, I was given the chance to go to treatment. I spent many years turning to alcohol instead of God to meet my needs. In recovery, I learned how to turn my life over to my Higher Power and depend completely on Him. Recovery changed the direction and path of my life. Today I have the privilege of helping others find hope and healing.
Who is someone who inspires you?
My friend Caroline Garner. She is the person who asked me to run my first half-marathon. She encouraged me, gave me confidence, and cheered me on. She continues to be my biggest supporter! I call her the “energizer bunny.” She simply never stops or gives up. Her enthusiasm is contagious!
What’s your favorite pastime or hobby?
Well, my first thought is running…but really my favorite pastime is learning. I always tell people I am a bonafide NERD! We truly know very little about the connection between our minds, emotions, bodies, and spirit. Yet, research is giving us much more insight into how each of these influences the other, and it is FASCINATING! I love to learn ways to help others make changes that influence their overall wellness.
What are you most proud of?
My family—Brent, Hunter, and Cole. We have been through so much together. I am amazed at their resiliency. Some families fall apart when difficult circumstances and struggles arise. Gratefully, they have allowed these struggles to grow them and they all use their stories to help others.
What does serving as a Herren Project Ambassador mean to you?
Being on Team Herren Project means that I have the opportunity to give to others what was given to me—the chance to change, to grow, to heal. It also gives me the privilege of joining a team of amazing people who simply go the extra mile to give back and grow good!
