Gifts That Make a Lasting Impact For Today and Tomorrow
Planned giving is the process of making a significant charitable gift during a donor’s life or at time of death that is part of his or her financial or estate plan. Did you know that you can make a gift to Herren Project that provides significant benefits to you today and lasting impact for Herren Project tomorrow.

Herren Project Endowment Fund
Did you know that Herren Project has an endowment at the Rhode Island Foundation? Our partnership with the Foundation gives us access to planned giving resources and professional endowment management. By contributing to our endowment, your charitable giving can benefit Herren Project forever.
For more than 100 years, the Rhode Island Foundation has been dedicated to improving the lives of Rhode Islanders. They partner with generous individuals, families, organizations, and corporations that share our commitment to the state, as well as with nonprofit organizations that provide the “boots-on-the-ground” services that make Rhode Island a better place to live, work, and play.

Donor Advised Funds
A donor advised fund (DAF) is a type of charitable investment account that provides an immediate tax benefit to you. It allows for you to recommend grants to charities of your choice over time.
Granting to Herren Project through your donor advised fund is simple and easy. You can recommend a gift to Herren Project today, or on a recurring basis (monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually) to help individuals and families affected by substance use disorder. Contact your fund manager today.
IRA’s
If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make a contribution of up to $100,000 annually from your IRA account to help the individuals and families Herren Project helps and potentially receive a tax benefit.
A donation transferred directly from your IRA administrator to Herren Project is generally not considered taxable income on your federal income tax return, but it does count toward your required minimum distribution. As always, please consult your advisors to determine if this type of gift is right for you.
Foundation Grants
Foundations provide critical support for the prevention and treatment of addiction. Investing in this lifesaving work will impact many not only in your community but across the country.
Public and private foundations provide vital support for the mission and programs of Herren Project. Generous gifts from family foundations, community foundations and corporate foundations have helped us to grow our programs and services allowing us to reach more individuals, families and communities across the US.
Gift of stock
Gifts of stock are a simple and effective way to support Herren Project’s mission and programs. There are great tax benefits as well. If you have held a stock for at least 1 year and the value has gone up, you may be able to avoid capital gains if the stock is donated to a nonprofit charity. Talk to your financial advisor if you think this option might be right for you.
Currently, Herren Project is only able to accept a gift of stock through electronic transfer of stock. Download our stock transfer instructions.

Beneficiary Designations
Three of the easiest ways to support Herren Project can be done in a matter of seconds. Simply add Herren Project as a beneficiary on any beneficiary designation form.
- Retirement plan – This is a tax-efficient and simple way to include Herren Project in your estate plan. Charities do not pay income taxes on the donations they receive, therefore distributions to charities will typically avoid being taxed as income.
- Savings account – Name Herren Project as beneficiary on a payable-upon-death (POD) designation. State laws vary. Consult with your banking representative.
- Life insurance policy – Life circumstances change and so does our need for life insurance. Name Herren Project as recipient of some or all of the proceeds of your policy that may no longer be needed for family protection.
