Every month, Herren Project highlights someone in our community that embodies the spirit of our mission to support, inspire and empower those affected by substance use disorder. This month, we would like to introduce you to our new Prevention Coordinator, Jillian Moriarty.
As Prevention Coordinator, Jillian manages our Herren Project Clubs and Wellness Week with Herren, two new initiatives that replace our retired THP Project Purple Initiative and Go Purple Week. Herren Project Clubs provide a peer network in schools across the country to empower youth to make healthy choices, support one another and develop coping and leadership skills. Wellness Week with Herren is an innovative nationwide prevention initiative and wellness movement with the goal of preventing the misuse of substances and empowering those affected by the disease of addiction. Jillian also works as a teacher in adult education in Massachusetts.
Jillian first heard about Herren Project through a friend who was in treatment through our treatment placement services. Last year, Jillian was reintroduced to Herren Project after her father passed away from alcoholism and wanted to raise awareness for the disease of addiction. She signed up for the Falmouth Road Race through Team Herren Project in honor of her father, William, joining a team of 60 teammates raising over $82,000 for the mission of Herren Project.
With the loss of her father, 2019 was a tough year for Jillian, but felt she needed to use her experience to help others struggling with addiction. She saw a job posting for Prevention Coordinator with Herren Project and knew she had found her calling. Even better, Jillian was officially hired for the job on her father’s birthday. She says it was a sign that she was making her father proud.
Today, Jillian uses her experience to help others by reaching out to young students before they make the wrong decisions. As a mother of two, Jillian understands how important the building of self-confidence at a young age is and she uses that knowledge to instill a sense of self-confidence in Herren Project Club members.
Jillian believes work should follow a passion in life – hers is helping people. Whether it be through Herren Project or as a teacher in adult education, Jillian hopes her passion shines through as she helps others reach their fullest potential.
