Nancy Harwood Eaton
From: York, Maine
What do you do for a living? I am a nurse in Labor and Delivery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA where I love taking care of women and their families during both times of great joy and times of extreme heartbreak.
How did you first connect with Herren Project? I first heard of Chris Herren when he came to speak at the high school in our town. A few years later when my youngest daughter was in recovery we attended a charity event where we connected with him again. My first connection with The Herren Project was through their family support groups. I was looking for anything that would help me navigate through the havoc my daughter’s substance use was creating in my life and in my family.
What is your interest in/connection to recovery? Both my oldest and my youngest daughters have substance use disorder. My oldest daughter has been in recovery for 10 years. My youngest daughter has been struggling for the past 7 years but is currently in a sober house and doing well.
Who is someone who inspires you? My friend Patti who I met through my family support group. She encourages me to look at things differently, to stay positive, and to connect with my faith. I know that I can always call her when life is throwing lemons my way. She has taught me how important it is to create boundaries with my loved ones and stick to them.
What’s your favorite pastime or hobby? Running, Tennis, and following Dierks Bentley around the country.
What are you most proud of? My ability to raise six incredible individuals on my own. They are all compassionate, kind, and truly good people.
What does serving as a Herren Project Ambassador mean to you? I was so thrilled and humbled when I was asked to be an ambassador. Being passionate about helping other families who are struggling with this disease has aided me in my recovery. I am a better nurse and person because I am involved with this organization. Every person with sud deserves good care regardless of where they are in their recovery process. This is something that I want to share with the world.
