Herren Project Hits the Road During Recovery Month
For the past 35 Septembers, SAMHSA has been celebrating National Recovery Month. This year, the Herren Project team joined in the celebration once again, attending five events across Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Our Recovery Services team, in particular, Angie Tibbetts (Director of Recovery Services) and Erica Boudreault (Recovery Care Coordinator), led this effort, and between the two of them, attended every event!
We are so grateful for our team and their efforts in building connections and community with new and existing partners and giving Herren Project a voice at recovery events in our community.
September Event Recap
7th Annual ROAR Motorcycle Ride for Opioid Addiction Recovery 9/8/24
Our Recovery Month celebrations got off to a roaring start with the ROAR Ride for Opioid Addiction Recovery. This 50-mile motorcycle ride from Falmouth to Hyannis is in its 7th year and raises money to support individuals on Cape Cod in moving forward with their recovery journeys. Herren Project is honored to support this incredible event led by Jamie and Karen Pina every year. Our founder, Chris Herren, was grateful to share his story this year and to thank the Falmouth community, which embraced him as he started his recovery journey there 16 years ago.

Nothing is more powerful than watching over 200 motorcycles cruise through 50 miles of Cape Cod’s scenic towns. You can’t help but feel a deep connection to the recovery community. The event is more than just a ride. It demonstrates the power of collective action and local support. Over $100,000 has been awarded to Herren Project to support the Cape Cod recovery community from their efforts. We are so grateful to be a beneficiary of this ride.
IGT Downtown 5K 9/15/24
On September 15, the Team Herren Project team, along with Herren Wellness, came together to run the IGT Downtown 5k in Providence, Rhode Island. The day’s energy was palpable, and crossing the finish line was empowering beyond measure. Everyone ran for a purpose – to support those affected by substance use disorder, to chase personal goals, and to raise awareness and funding for our mission. Together, we ran with grateful hearts, knowing that every step helped those on their journeys to recovery.
Peer 2 Peer Recovery Support Center 9/20/24
On September 20, we joined the Peer 2Peer Recovery Support Center in Fall River for their first Recovery Awareness Day. Peer2Peer is a nonprofit organization that supports individuals on their recovery journey in the Fall River, MA, area. They offer daily recovery groups that embrace all pathways to healing, and their focus on helping the overlooked in their community ensures no one is forgotten or slips through the cracks. It was incredible to connect with people in all stages of their recovery, including some local Herren Project alums.
Rally for Recovery 9/22/24
It wouldn’t be Recovery Month in Rhode Island without Rally4Recovery! This event is the state’s largest recovery celebration and features inspirational speakers, numerous resource tables, a live DJ with dancing, and activities for the kids. It’s a day dedicated to connecting with others and celebrating recovery in all its forms.
It was a moving day filled with meeting those in recovery, those seeking recovery, and those who love or have been impacted by someone in recovery. Herren Project was grateful to be a part of this RI event and able to share resources with all who need them. This celebration demonstrated that there’s no one-size-fits-all path to recovery. Recovery is a journey, not a destination.
Barnstable County Recovery Event 9/25/24
We closed the month by hearing our founder, Chris Herren, speak at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center, hosted by the Barnstable County’s Sherrif’s Office. Chris shared his powerful story in a room full of community members, Herren Project alumni, and our Herren Wellness and Herren Talks family. One of Angie and Erica’s favorite moments was witnessing an alumni meet Chris for the first time. Watching her genuine emotions unfold as she connected with Chris’s message was incredibly powerful, followed by a chance to meet and thank him personally. It reminded us that true impact comes from vulnerability and deep connection.

The disease of addiction is often one of sadness and struggle, so it is powerful to be able to take a month and celebrate the resiliency and hope of recovery and the entire recovery community.
