Herren Project Club Spotlight

The John A. Holmes High School Herren Project Club was founded in 2015 by Aylin, a student who was passionate about substance use prevention and student leadership. Although Aylin and her brother have since graduated, the club continues to thrive thanks to strong student involvement and the ongoing support of her mother, Kelley. The club meets monthly at 7:15 A.M., and despite the early start time, students remain committed, with an average of about twenty of the forty-six members attending each meeting and even more participating in activities. As the school prepares to open a new building next semester, club members are hopeful the administration will consider a revised schedule that better supports meeting attendance.

Club Highlights and Accomplishments

Over the years, the club has celebrated many meaningful moments. One of their most significant achievements was raising funds in 2018 to bring Chris Herren to their school and community through Herren Talks. His visit not only increased student involvement in the club but also encouraged members of the community to seek support for mental health and substance use challenges.

A large part of the club’s work focuses on raising awareness about the importance of mental and physical health and creating safe, inclusive environments where students can be their authentic selves. Members learn to navigate life’s stressors through healthy coping skills and positive relationships.

Each year, the club hosts a community 5K that brings together students, families, and community members from their small, rural town for a morning of running, walking, and connecting outdoors in their beautiful, historic downtown. Funds raised from the event support educational programming and community service projects throughout the year.

Another major annual initiative is Purple Out Week. During this week, the club hosts fun and educational events leading up to a Purple Out football game, where the community fills the stands with purple and visits tables to learn more about the club’s mission. They also distribute educational materials focused on mental health awareness. In March, the club participates in Wellness Week with Herren, offering additional engaging and informative activities both at school and in the community. This year, they hope to sponsor a skills-and-drills clinic for younger students with a former basketball player to further spread the message of wellness, connection, and positive role modeling.

Community Service and Engagement

Community service is an important part of the club’s identity. Throughout the year, members participate in activities such as Teacher Appreciation Day, Toys for Tots, visiting nursing homes, reading to younger students during Read Across America, and other service projects. They believe that helping others supports those they serve while also strengthening their own well-being and personal growth.

Celebrating Their Impact

The club also makes time to celebrate its contributions to the school and community. Each year, they plan at least one fun end-of-year activity. Last year, members traveled to Virginia Beach and played Topgolf as a way to recognize their dedication and teamwork.

None of their work would be possible without the ongoing support of school and community partners. The Herren Project Club at John A. Holmes High School is grateful for the support of local businesses, community organizations, and state partners, including the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, all of whom help make their mission and programming possible.
