Debbie Lathrop

From: I currently live in Massachusetts

What I do for a living: I am the proud mother of two kind-hearted children, Vanessa (18) and Jeffrey (16). I work full-time at an elementary school as a paraprofessional in a first-grade program for autistic children. Not only do I teach them daily, but I am astounded at what they teach me every day. In addition to my work at the school, I also host at a restaurant part-time. I also work with the blind/visually impaired population one weekend a month, bringing them out into the community to gain everyday experiences, and providing assistance when needed. I certainly know how to keep busy!

Why I choose to run New York with Herren Project:
I am running in the NYC Marathon with Herren Project because we lost Philip John Kelly to an overdose on March 10, 2017. He was our man, our myth, and our legend. It has taken me years to accept this enormous loss. I was so lucky to find this organization through my daughter, who was ecstatic that Chris Herren would visit her school. After a little research, I am preparing to run my first marathon ever! Being surrounded by this group of people who get out there every day to run and share their stories helps me heal and understand that recovery is possible. I am excited to pour my heart into this race and help those struggling with addiction.

What I do for fun (besides running and helping others!):
When I have a little free time I am happy to spend it on the couch, go for a hike, or spend it in the kitchen with my children, who get their kicks from teasing me.

What I’m most proud of:
I am most proud of the people I am surrounded by who have helped me along the way. Family, friends, and acquaintances have guided my little family of three to be the best version of us, and I love us!
