Emily Prinzevalli

I am from Setauket, NY, and I have been teaching math at the middle and high school level for 23 years. I am currently teaching 9th, 10th, and 12th grade in the Half Hollow Hills School District. I love teaching and feel very lucky to have found a career that I truly enjoy.

Why I chose to run for Team Herren Project: Running a marathon has always been a goal that I wanted to achieve. Upon looking for an organization to fundraise for I found Herren Project. Chris Herren had presented at the high school where I teach last January, and I was very moved by his story and the message he shared. I discovered that Herren Project does great work for a cause that’s very close to my heart; addiction prevention and awareness. I have unfortunately seen the pain and destruction that a substance abuse disorder can cause an individual and their family. In August of 2017, we lost my brother Ben to an overdose. He was 42 years old and left behind a daughter and a family that loved him very much. He struggled with addiction and mental illness for many years, but he never gave up hope that he would recover. He had been sober for over a year, but unfortunately, he lost his battle. My family continues to feel the pain of this loss while we simultaneously embrace the life of recovery that my other brother Jay has discovered. He, too, has struggled with addiction but has been sober for over seven years. He inspires us every day with his strength and resilience. So, on November 6th, I will represent Herren Project and run my first full marathon; in honor of Ben and in celebration of Jay. With every step I take, I will raise awareness about addiction and remind others that there is always HOPE and to never give up!

In my free time, I of course, love to run and have often found it my “therapy” when I need to clear my head and calm the chaos around me. I am in a running group called the Selden Hills Warriors. Through this group, I have learned to enjoy running with friends just as much as I enjoy it in solitude. When I am not running or teaching, I love to spend time with my husband, Frank, and my two amazing kids, Gianna and Frankie. Our favorite spot to vacation is Aruba, and we travel there almost every summer. On the weekends, you can find me at a baseball game rooting for my son or at a dance competition watching my daughter perform. Their joy is my joy, and I absolutely love being their mom. I also enjoy reading and doing puzzles; sudoku, Ken Ken, and Wordle.

I am most proud of the strength and perseverance I have displayed in training for this marathon. I cannot wait to run and be a part of this amazing team!
