Frank and Sara Shingleton

From: Raleigh, NC

What we do for a living: Sara is an Engineering Consultant working as a Project Manager at Tompkins Solutions. Frank is a Contract Negotiator at Cisco Systems in RTP.

Why we choose to run New York with Herren Project:
We are both active endurance athletes since 2016. Sara ran her first full marathon in 2018 at the Blue Ridge Marathon with the Herren Project. Frank later that year completed his first full distance Ironman in Louisville benefitting the Herren Project. The training and fundraising for our efforts made us aware of the support we had in recovery. We had struggled in the early stages of Frank’s recovery to find our new way as a family. By sharing our story, we found the confidence and comfort we had been looking for through this journey while helping others get into recovery as well. Up until September of 2015, we had lived many years through Frank’s active alcohol use and the destruction that comes along with this disease, and through some of the most painful moments, we’ve come out on the other side, the side of HOPE! We wanted to run the New York City Marathon together this time and use this fundraising effort as a channel to continue spreading the message of hope and that there is a wonderful life in recovery. We both support Herren Project’s mission and are truly blessed to be part of a great team helping those in recovery and their families.

What we do for fun (besides running and helping others!):
We love anything outdoors, concerts, family trips and adventures, and watching our kids play soccer in their travel league.

What we’re most proud of:
Celebrating 6 years of Frank’s sobriety has brought us closer as a family and allowed us the ability to experience a happier life and the rewards of sobriety such as running the NYC Marathon together!
