2023 127th Boston Marathon Team Herren Project Bio Questionnaire

Name: Frank Shingleton

Where I live:  Raleigh, NC

What I do for a living:  I’m a Contract Negotiator at Cisco Systems in

RTP.

Why I choose to run Boston with Herren Project:

My wife, Sara, and I have been part of this great organization since she ran her first marathon in

2018 with Herren Project. Not long after, I fundraised to benefit Herren Project for my first full distance Ironman in Louisville. Over the years, the fundraising efforts with Herren Project for multiple events have given us the upmost appreciation of this organization by all the support and love we’ve experienced in recovery as I struggled in the early stages of my recovery to find our new way with family and friends. By fundraising for Herren Project and sharing my story over the past 5 years, I have found confidence and comfort that I had been looking for, while helping others get into recovery as well.

Through my active use until September 19, 2015, my family and I have lived many years

through the destruction that comes along with substance use disorder, and through

some of the most painful moments, we’ve come out on the other side, the side of

hope. Running the Boston Marathon has been a long-time goal of mine since I started my journey in active recovery and endurance sports; and with such I wanted to be part of this great marathon team and use this fundraising effort as a channel to continue spread the message of hope and that there is a wonderful life in recovery.  My family and I support Herren Project’s mission and are truly blessed to be part of a great team helping those in recovery and their

families.

What I do for fun (besides running and helping others!):

I love anything outdoors, concerts, family trips and adventures, and watching our

kids play soccer in their travel league.

What I’m most proud of:

Celebrating 7+ years of sobriety which has brought me closer to my family and friends; and

allowed me the ability to experience a happier life and the rewards of sobriety such

as running the Boston Marathon!
