Nell Hurley
From: St. Paul, MN
What I do for a living: I’m the founder of Hurley Health, which combines fitness with recovery coaching to help people overcome substance use challenges. I’m also a consultant for the Peer Recovery Center of Excellence.
Why I choose to run New York with Herren Project:
I met Chris Herren in 2012 when he received an award at America Honors Recovery in Washington DC for the work he was doing to support people in recovery through the Herren Project. I was totally moved by the work he was doing, especially with high school students and I’ve been a supporter of Herren Project ever since then. Plus, I’ve wanted to run the NYC Marathon for many years. I’m so excited to run this marathon and to do so on behalf of the Herren Project, an organization that I believe in with all my heart!
What I do for fun (besides running and helping others!):
I am lucky in that one of the gifts of my own recovery is that I’ve been able to tap into so many things that I enjoy doing in spite of living in a world that is so fast, connected, and crazy. I love to knit, read, watch movies, hike, ski, play with my dog, travel with my husband, bike, cook, paint, and sit on my front porch.
What I’m most proud of:
I’ve been sober for 24 years and the thing I’m most proud of is the fact that my 17 year-old son has never once seen me drunk or hungover. He will have his own journey in life, but I’m proud of the fact that I’ve been able to model continuous long-term recovery for him.
