You Can and You Will
by Ella Tanis
It is a busy time for many as school has begun with active daily schedules, and the holiday season is quickly approaching. Going to school and work each day knowing a break comes soon (I have a calendar where I check the days off as they go!) can be difficult for many. Getting through such busy times can be an obstacle, but I have found that a positive mindset makes it all much easier.
As I was completing a college application recently, I stumbled upon a supplemental prompt that spoke to me. This prompt asked what “the truest thing is known to me.” As I rely heavily on positive mindsets, the words came out with little-to-no thought.
I thought about how as I stand on the starting line before a cross country race, ready to start my watch, I always repeat to my team and myself, “you can and you will,” and how I have positive messages written on my wrist to look at during races. My coach always says the races, workouts, and long runs are all 90% mental. I laughed when I first heard that. How could a physical sport have such an impacting mental aspect? The second I go into a race doubting myself, it becomes mental. That is how I adopted “you can and you will” into my mindset, not only in races but in everyday life.
From standing on the start line of a race to sitting at my desk waiting for a teacher to hand me a test, the “you can and you will” mindset gets me and others through whatever challenges we face. Obstacles occur in life, and I cannot always predict what I will encounter. However, I have learned that going in thinking failure will be the outcome will do more harm than going in knowing I can succeed in what I am about to do. Although it may not always be easy to maintain this positive mindset, I find it just as important to remind myself that challenging myself and pushing through obstacles will only make me stronger. Not to mention the overwhelming feeling of pride after overcoming a difficult task!
So how does this relate to getting through busy and chaotic times? Take life day by day. You know you have gotten through yesterday, so you can and will get through tomorrow.
