Why is Volunteering or Community Engagement Important to You?
This month is known to be National Volunteer Month, and I am sharing my experiences to explain why volunteering is important to me!
Since the very early stages of my life, I have attempted to help my community in any way that I could. Beginning in elementary school and continuing throughout middle school, I was a member of the Red Cross Organization to help people in unfortunate times of disaster. Knowing that I had an impact on others’ lives, I became very passionate about helping the community and volunteering with different organizations. Throughout the 16 years of my life, I have gained over 1000 hours of community service. I have done this by engaging in various activities, such as advocating for mental health, advocating for a tobacco-free lifestyle, and helping people live a healthy life. I have also completed a community car wash for fundraising and tutoring. It is very relieving to hear that I am having a positive impact on the world and the community around me; this motivates me to continue engaging in community activities to facilitate others’ lives.
Currently, I volunteer with a lot of different programs, mostly surrounding youth actions and advocating for healthier lifestyles. One such organization that I volunteer for is the Herren Project. I have been able to join other youth ambassadors from across the United States to advocate for healthier lifestyles and potentially save people’s lives by offering them advice. I have helped people become sober and prevented them from starting to get addicted.
This is why volunteering and community engagement are important to me. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?”. This question always keeps me going and motivates me to engage in more volunteering programs. I am able to save lives and spread awareness about different topics to enhance the quality of life for everyone. You can volunteer too! You can save lives too!
