Running For Good
In 2022, the dynamic leaders of our local running club, Nacogdoches United Runners, and the passionate owners of Push to Win Running, approached me with an exciting proposition: to revive the Nacogdoches Half Marathon. This beloved race had unfortunately not returned after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the previous organizing company had no plans for its comeback. Willie James, along with Kim and Juan Pineda, the dedicated owners of PTW Running, have played a pivotal role in bringing races back to our community. As good friends and fellow runners, they were well aware of my journey in recovering from alcohol use disorder and have been long-time supporters of my business, Whole Again Counseling + Wellness. They mentioned being inspired by my commitment to running as part of Team Herren Project and asked if I would support the idea of Herren Project being the chosen charity to receive funds from the half marathon. It was a touching gesture that Herren Project has been selected as the beneficiary for both the 2023 and 2024 races.

I was deeply honored by their choice of Herren Project, as it signifies that our recovery stories are making an impact and resonating with others. For me, running is an integral part of my recovery and therapy, and now, I have the incredible opportunity to help others through my own experiences.
The Nacogdoches Half Marathon and 5K, though a modest race in a small town, is a day brimming with camaraderie, family, and community spirit. Many children experience the thrill of their first race on the historic brick streets of Nacogdoches. The staff at my wellness center also actively participates, spreading the message of support and help to those who need it. It’s not just a race; it’s a celebration of resilience, recovery, and the power of community.
