Celebrating our Volunteers
At this year’s Newport 10 Miler, Herren Project was proud to once again be part of the race-day experience by hosting a water station for runners along the course. The water station holds special meaning for Herren Project, as it was started in memory of Bud Boyd, a beloved Legacy Ambassador whose passion, kindness, and commitment to the Herren Project community left a lasting impact.
The Newport 10 Miler was Bud’s favorite race, and each year, the water station serves as a meaningful way to honor his memory while continuing his spirit of service, encouragement, and connection.
This year, Herren Project was also proud to cheer on our team of runners, who took on the 10-mile course and raised funds in support of our mission. Their dedication, along with the support of the volunteers along the course, made the day a true celebration of community.
Eight dedicated volunteers showed up early, brought great energy, and helped make the day memorable for runners and spectators alike. From setting up the water station to cheering on participants and handing out water, our volunteers played an important role in supporting the athletes and representing the Herren Project community.
For many of our volunteers, the morning was about more than passing out cups of water. It was an opportunity to give back, connect with others, and help raise awareness for Herren Project’s mission.
“We love giving back to the community and raising awareness for a great organization,” shared Abby, one of the volunteers who helped at the water station.
That spirit of service was felt throughout the morning. Whether runners were moving quickly through the station or taking a brief moment to smile and say thank you, our volunteers made sure each person felt supported. Their cheers and encouragement helped bring the Herren Project mission to life in a simple but meaningful way: showing up for others.
Andrew, another volunteer, summed up the experience with enthusiasm: “I can’t wait to do this next year. Best day ever.”
Herren Project is deeply grateful to all eight volunteers who gave their time and energy to support the Newport 10 Miler and help carry forward Bud’s legacy. Their commitment reminds us that community is built through moments like these — people coming together, offering support, and creating a positive experience for others.
“We are so grateful to our volunteers who showed up with such enthusiasm and heart for the Newport 10 Miler,” said Bonnie Sawyer, Executive Director of Herren Project. “This water station is especially meaningful because it honors the memory of Bud Boyd, our Legacy Ambassador, and carries forward the spirit of connection and service he brought to Herren Project. We couldn’t do this work without people who are willing to give their time, energy, and kindness.”
Being a WAVEMAKER isn’t just about running a race. It’s about showing up, giving back, and helping create moments of support and connection in your community. Whether you volunteer, cheer, fundraise, or participate in your own way, every act of support helps move Herren Project’s mission forward.
Thank you to our Newport 10 Miler water station volunteers for showing up with heart, kindness, and team spirit. Your support made a difference on race day, honored Bud’s memory in a beautiful way, and reminded us of the power of community.
